photography

I'm always observing and waiting for my moments. I’m looking and exploring and have a camera with me almost all the time. I snap when I have to—when I’ve made a choice and I see something I have to capture. I love arranging flowers and growing them and picking them and photographing them. The photographs are part of my artistic process—it’s a pleasure and a memory in a moment. A way to examine and explore my subjects. But I don’t love painting from a photograph. I need to paint from life. Using my mind and my heart to explore whatever I am painting means being in the moment with it. I will occasionally use a photograph as I paint, but I rarely paint with an intention of diving towards photo realism. My photography is really separate from painting, but of course intertwined in that it is part of my exploring and deep study of the world, what I choose to paint, and how I compose.
